About me…

Edith Boucher-Hazelton

All pronouns! (they/she/he...)

Edith has more than a decade of experience teaching what they love: music and movement. They have a passion for all the ways we can express ourselves through our bodies. They received a bachelor's degree in jazz voice from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, and regularly perform in jazz clubs and concert halls throughout Canada and the US. Edith also performs and teaches swing dancing. Informed by their own journey of understanding and exploring their gender, Edith's trans voice coaching offers a mindful and joyful approach to learning how to alter our speaking voices to feel more like ourselves as we navigate the gendered world we live in.

Edith splits their time in between Montreal (their hometown) and New York City. In their free time, they enjoy doing yoga, nail art, and gardening.

Gender-affirming voice lessons

My teaching studio is a safe and accessible space for you to find your voice by learning tools and skills that are gender-affirming and create a sense of euphoria.

In our lessons, you’ll learn about…

  • What the different sound qualities of the voice are beyond pitch (there’s so much more than having a high or low voice!)

  • Exercises that can help you find the voice you want to have

  • Understanding the anatomy behind voice production

  • How to make sure you are taking care of yourself and your voice

  • Understanding how we speak in different gendered ways from a cultural perspective (if you have an accent or a particular way of speaking that is culturally meaningful to you, we’ll be sure to keep it!)

  • How to sing in your chosen voice, if you’d like

  • Whatever you are interested in: I’m here for you!

Although all of this might feel daunting at first, I promise that this journey won’t take forever and that soon enough you’ll be able to have the voice you want all the time!

  • Full price - $80 per hour, 40$ per half hour

  • Up to 50% reduced price available if needed, contact me for more information

For the time being, I’ll be teaching all classes online.

I also teach singing, piano, cello, upright bass, ukulele, and swing dancing! Learn more about music lessons and the performance work I do by clicking the links on the top left corner of this page.

J’offre des cours d’altération de la voix pour personnes trans et non-binaires en français aussi!

Testimonials

Alice Siregar (she/her/they)

Edith was perfect for my trans voice alteration experience. They worked with my experience and goals in order to tailor the lessons to my needs. I believe that Edith will be perfect for anyone starting their journey as well as someone well on their way. He will go over some basics should you need to, but also send you home with exercises to do on your own time. Even after one lesson you'll leave her class with a little toolkit of things that will help you on your journey. That was an important thing to have for me. They gave me little trigger phrases or words whenever I felt like I was losing my more feminine voice. Those helped me get right back where I needed my voice to be. The lesson experience is also very safe with Edith. There is no judgment in his class. They'll make you feel as safe as can be.

Blair Webber (he/they)

In our lessons, Edith provides a comfortable space for me to play with voice alteration. Edith was caring and reassuring, being sure to ask me why I was interested in this instead of assuming I just want to pass. Edith was also comfortable working with me as a true beginner. I had never taken any kind voice lesson before, but Edith's knowledge and patience helped me feel comfortable trying the new exercises. After our first lesson, I felt an embodied connection to my voice. I realized it's another form of expression I can explore, alter, and sense in myself, rather than just some noise that comes out. Most of all, our lessons are fun! Working with Edith helped me feel more curious about and confident in my voice.

Becca Lavelle (they)

Edith's coaching is fun, easy to understand, and easy to apply. Edith's supportive and joyous personality makes learning exercises and techniques enjoyable, and Edith is great at clearly and concisely explaining just the right amount of theory. I can't wait to learn more!
